Digital Clutter- i.e Desktop Computer Clutter

Can you find that document you created last month?  Are you asking yourself where that email you need to respond to is now?  Is your desktop cluttered with files and folders?

Computer clutter can be a bigger problem than physical clutter because there is an endless amount of virtual storage.  We use up lots of storage with pictures, videos and music.  But the price of more storage is cheap, so why not keep saving? Because, you cannot find what you need, when you need it.

So how do you clear it out, organize it, and find what you need to work on or respond to in a timely manner?

There are many ways to organize digital files, just as with physical ones. So it is important to find the system that makes sense to you and implement it.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Store all documents you create in Documents.
  • Do regular clean up and upkeep of your desktop and folders. Erase old files, or store on external drives 1-2 times a year.
  • Clean out email regularly, separating reference information from action items.
  • Put email in archive folders to have on hand when you need it.
  • Use search tools to find what you need fast!  Even when you are fairly organized, it can be challenging to remember what folder you put something in 2 months ago.  Spotlight on Mac is amazing and there are search tools you can install on PCs that give you similar power and control.
  • Always, Always, Always have an onsite and offsite backup!
