Preparing yourself for the holidays

Preparing yourself for the holidays

The holiday season has officially started, although stores have been pushing us to believe that for weeks. So if you’ve already gotten your calendar full and you’re feeling overwhelmed by the holidays, go grab a cup of tea, then come back and check out these tips for keeping your holidays happy and light.

  • Schedule your down time first.
This may mean a massage, or a nap, or a whole day of nothing- I’d advise all of the above if you can.
  • Stick to your exercise routine if you’ve got one.
Don’t let an overly busy schedule keep you from getting your body moving, whether that’s a walk around the block at lunch or a yoga class in the evenings. Cling to this like it’s your life preserver, because it is. It’s what will keep you nice when Aunt So and So tells you what your doing wrong as a parent or your grandmother criticizes your lack of a ‘real job’.
  • Choose your social obligations carefully.
Most of the events that you’ll be interested in or invited to are ones you’ve attended before. Take awhile with your cup of tea to list everything you remember from last year, or even look at your calendar from last year. Now’s the awesome part- you decide which ones you WANT to be a part of, not the ones you feel obligated to attend. Of course there’s going to be some family/ work obligations but keep those to a minimum- do the basics and then do what fills you with the fun and light of the season!
  • Envision what you want to feel after all the presents are unwrapped, the New Year has passed.
What’s going to give you that feeling? Is it Mom’s Christmas pie? Is it hiking in the crisp air? Is it decorating a tree with your friends? Those are the things that should fill your calendar.
  • How much do you want to decorate/ host/ entertain?
You get to decide. If it’s not very much but your family is into it- let them take the lead, bring the kids into the mix- where do they want to get the tree? Make the time together more about being together than about the result- because I have a hunch that’s what you’re craving anyway.
  • And don’t forget that nap!
    I’m not kidding.
